Developmental Checklist: 19-23 months

Each child is unique and will progress at different rates based on their abilities.  Use the time constraints of this information as a guideline only.  If you feel that your child is deviating significantly from these skills, please consult your Pediatrician. If your child is already enrolled in therapy and you have questions, concerns or need further clarification, please contact your child’s therapist.

Gross Motor Skills

  • Walks down stairs with hand held
  • Propels a “ride on” toy without pedals
  • Runs fairly well
  • Jumps in place
  • Walks upstairs holding railing

Fine Motor Skills

  • Imitates vertical stroke and circular scribble “l” and “o”
  • Inserts 3 shapes (circle, square, triangle)
  • Builds tower with 6 blocks
  • Imitates a horizontal stroke “-“

Visual/Perceptual

  • Remembers where objects belong
  • Knows “upside down” and “right side up”
  • Matches objects to pictures
  • Knows “big” and “little”

Language/Communication

  • Repeats things said
  • Uses “I”, “me” and “you”
  • Joins 2-3 words in sentences
  • Talks constantly

Social/Emotional

  • Refers to self by name
  • Plays by self, imitates own play
  • Imitates adult behavior
  • Attempts to comfort others
  • Watches others play and plays near them but not with them
  • Enjoys rough and tumble play

Self Help Skills

  • Turns door knobs
  • Washes and dries hands
  • Puts on shoes, socks and pants with assistance
  • Points to 4 body parts
  • Unzips large zipper
  • Indicates toilet needs
